Youth summer employment rate

The youth labor force - 16- to 24-year-olds working or actively looking for work-grows sharply between April and July each year. Many high school and college students search for or take summer jobs during these months, and many graduates enter the labor market to look for or begin permanent employment.

If you've had increasing difficulty hiring youth in the summer, there's an explanation. The youth summer employment rate has been steadily declining, down to 60.4% in July 2024 from 71.6% in July 2000.
